Best known for
Lake Muturikwe is the third largest dam in Zimbabwe. It features one of the most varied shorelines of Zimbabwe ranging from granite cliffs to tree lined rocky beaches. The game reserve on the northern shores supports the greatest number of antelope species found in any national park in the country. The Lake is an ideal water resort with fishing, yachting, power-boating and water skiing.

Location
Situated 32 km southeast of Masvingo in south eastern Zimbabwe (on the opposite side of the Lake from the Great Zimbabwe Ruins).

Size
The Park covers 170 square km.

Wildlife
A large breeding population of white rhino are found here, as well as hippo, crocodile, giraffe, wildebeest, warthog, ostrich and many species of antelope. The abundant fish life includes bass and bottlenose.

Environment
More than 300m long, the dam wall rises 63m from the bed of a narrow granite gorge. The Park lies in a landscape of weathered granite hills and deep ravines. To the west is the Beza Range and in the east rise the spectacular, thickly wooded Nyuni Mountains.

Vegetation
The Park consists of grassy plains and densely wooded ravines. The acacia trees support the giraffe population.

Climate
The sunny dry winter runs from April through to October and the hot wet summer runs from November through to March. One should expect cold nights in the winter and wet weather in the summer.

When to go
The Lake is open all year round. The best time to go is in the dry season from August to October since visibility when game viewing is better. Most roads are accessible at this time.

Activities
Game viewing from one's vehicle, pony trails, guided walks and water sports, and the lake is renowned for bass fishing.

Accommodation
Within the Park there are fully equipped and serviced National Park chalets as well as camping and caravanning facilities. On the opposite lake shore there are several very reputable establishments including Inn on Great Zimbabwe, Lodge at the Ancient City, the Great Zimbabwe Hotel. A few self catering cottages on the lakeshore are also available.

How to get there
Follow the Birchenough Road heading east out of Masvingo for 15 km and the road to the Recreational Park is well signposted turning to the right.
