Best known for
This Park is home to the only rhino one will see in Zambia - the rest
all having been poached to extinction. The Park was created to protect
the Victoria Falls rainforest
area. The wildlife is well accustomed to the vehicles driving through
the Park so one can view them at relatively close quarters.
Location
The southern most edge of Zambia on the border with Zimbabwe. This
Park is situated along the upper Zambezi River stretching 12 km up
river from the Victoria Falls.
Size
The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park covers a tiny area of 66 square kilometres.
Wildlife
Other than the white rhino mentioned above the species found here
include: giraffe, bushbuck, buffalo, sable, eland, wildebeest, impala,
warthog, vervet monkey, baboon and zebra. In the dry months of August
and September elephants come across from the Zimbabwean side in search
of food.
Environment
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is divided into two sections: the one
at the Victoria Falls and the other section the Game Park which lies
further west along the riverbank.
Vegetation
Much of the Park is covered by mopane woodland and tall riverine forest
grows near the rivers well as large trees and Ilala palms.
Climate and when to go
Often humid and hot in the summer months October to March. The Park
is open throughout the year.
Activities
The attraction of the Victoria Falls has created a thriving tourist
area and there are a whole host of activities on offer. First and
foremost, viewing the mighty Victoria
Falls. From the Park entrance a network of paths lead through
thick vegetation to various viewpoints of the Falls. From the Knife
Edge footbridge one can get a spectacular view of the Falls. Other
good viewing points are Falls Bridge, Boiling Pot, the Power Station
and the various gorges.
Accommodation
Closest to the Falls is The
Royal Livingstone and The
Zambezi Sun, a new two-hotel complex. Excellent exclusive lodges
further up along the Zambezi River include Thorntree
Lodge, Tongabezi,
and The River Club. The Waterfront close to the Falls themselves,
provides both budget and middle market accommodation.
How to get there
By road
Either from the Zimbabwean side or from Livingstone.
By air
There is an airport in Livingstone and another international airport
is located in Zimbabwe, near the town of Victoria Falls.
