Best known for
Known for its coastline and oldest marine reserve in Africa as well as the Tsitsikamma Mountains and sheer cliffs falling to the sea. It was established in 1964 and is also well known for its surf along the coast, and its beautiful forests. The stunning scenery and hiking trails have made this Park very popular.

Location
This Park lies on the Garden Route between Nature's Valley (Groot River West) and the Groot River East. The area is in the central part of the Southern Cape, east of Plettenberg Bay.

Size
The Park protects 100 km of coast east of Plettenberg Bay including 80 km of land 5.5 km of marine tract.

Wildlife
Smaller species of antelope are found in the Park such as bushbuck and blue duiker. While other residents are baboon, monkeys, rock dassie, grey mongoose and Cape Clawless otters and honeybadgers.

Dolphins and whales can be seen off the shore and over 200 bird species are found in the Park including Narina trogon, Knysna Loerie and black oystercatcher. The shore life is rich with over 65 species of fish.

Environment and vegetation
There are two major types of vegetation: indigenous forest and fynbos (heath). The forest area includes many well know trees such as the yellowwood, stinkwood, Cape chestnut and milkwood. The Park is generally hilly and rugged with flowing rivers and narrow valleys.

Climate
The cape is hot and humid in summer from September to April with cooler winters from May to August.

When to go
The cooler winter months May to August. The Park is open throughout the year from 5.30 am to 7.30 pm.

Activities
Hiking trails, including the famous 48km five day Otter trail, underwater trails, water sports, scuba diving, snorkelling, rock fishing, swimming and canoeing.

Accommodation
Hotels and guesthouses nearby include: Hog's Hollow Country Lodge, Kurland Country Hotel.

Two main rest camps in the Park have self catering cottages, 'oceanettes' and huts, together with restaurant, shops and swimming pool. There are also camping facilities and hiking trail huts at Storms River.

How to get there
Take the N2 from Plettenberg Bay and the signposted right turn to Tsitsikamma National Park. Buses running between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth will also drop off at the signposted turn off from where it is an 8 km walk to the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp.
