Overview
The most lavish and opulent resort in Africa, Sun City is to South Africa what Las Vegas is to America, though on a much smaller scale and with the whole "City" being one complex in its own right. Although Sun City does offer the gambling, nightlife and neon lights, the major difference is that breathtaking aspects of Africa have been incorporated into the architecture, décor, entertainment themes and general layout of this playground paradise. International golf tournaments, rock stars, and first class entertainment shows are highlights, attracting thousands of visitors at various times of the year.

Standing out of the surrounding bushveld like an oasis Sun City and the surrounding Pilanesberg National Park are a destination for those that like things "over the top" and intend to spoil themselves. Nothing at Sun City is done in half measures: from the large man-made lake, tropically landscaped gardens, the superb international golf course, to all of the hotel facilities on offer.

The Palace of the Lost City
The most recently opened (1992) and indeed the flagship of the four Sun City hotels the Palace is a luxury hotel that lives up to, if not exceeds its name. A majestic entrance with mosaic marble floors, soaring columns, and a courtyard dominated by a life size bronze bull elephant are features of the imaginative architecture, design and décor. Luxury, wealth, and meticulous attention to detail create an experience second to none. The spacious suites all have superb views of either the Valley of Waves or the sub tropical jungle surrounds complete with massive waterfalls. The premier restaurant at the palace is the Villa del Palazzo, which overlooks the pool.

Climate
The area has hot summers (September to April) and cool, dry winters (May to August).

When to go
The cool dry winter months of May to August although Sun City is open all year round.

Activities
The water sports on offer all centre round the lake and include: parasailing, windsurfing, skiing, and sailing. The Valley of the Waves is a beach sports venue for more sunbathing. Other sporting activities include tennis, several swimming pools, horse riding, volleyball, squash, bowls, and ten-pin bowling. The Entertainment Centre offers non-stop entertainment from the casinos to slot machines, virtual reality videos, bingo, cinemas, cocktail bars, restaurants, and various exclusive boutiques. There are international rock star concerts scheduled throughout the year, various extravaganzas of risqué dancing, and other variety shows.

How to get there
By air
The Pilanesberg airport is 7 km northeast of the entrance to Sun City and there are daily flights from Johannesburg.

By road
Approximately two hours from Johannesburg the road is unfortunately not that well signposted so one should keep an eye on the map - either go via Rustenburg or via Brits.
