Hluhluwe
Umfolozi Game Reserve |

Best known for
Known as the oldest game reserve in Africa (1897), with a corridor
which runs between Hluhluwe and Umfolozi facilitating the movement
of game between the two areas. It is home to the "Big Five"
elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo and a good variety
of upmarket lodges. It is also renowned for its magnificent views.
One of the main attractions of the Park are its organised wilderness
trails complete with armed guide and donkeys to carry all supplies.
Location
Zululand, which is about 50 km north of Mtubatuba and 280 km from
Durban.
Size
Including the corridor and both Reserves, it covers an area of nearly
100,000 hectares.
Wildlife
There are most predators to be found such as lion, leopard, wild dog,
cheetah and hyena. The Reserve is also the home of the white rhino
and the black rhino (to a lesser degree), elephant, buffalo, giraffe,
kudu, wildebeest and other antelope. Good birding opportunities are
to be had as well.
Environment and Vegetation
The Reserve is known for its steep, wooded hills and grass covered
slopes. There are abundant streams and rivers and the Reserve is host
to many different species of plant life.
Climate
Hluhluwe Umfolozi has hot, humid summers (from September to April)
with heavy rainfall and cool winters (May to August).
When to go
The cooler months of May to August. The Reserve is open throughout
the year, from 5am to 7pm in summer (from September to April) and
from 6am to 6pm in winter (May to August).
Activities
Game-viewing, picnics, driving trails, guided walks and walking trails.
Accommodation
Hluhluwe River
Lodge is recommended. There are also has rest huts for overnight
hikers as well as self catering cottages.
How to get there
By road
The Reserve is located 15km west of the N2 take the N2 from
Mtubatuba and take the R618 to Noncom.
By air
Airstrips accommodate private charter flights.
Precautions
Precautions must be taken against malaria.
