Overview
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the world Cape Town
is also the oldest settlement in South Africa. Considered by business
investors as the "boom town" it is undoubtedly the most
popular city in South Africa. Dominated visually by the kilometre
high flat-topped Table Mountain, the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town
offers vine yards, excellent beaches, magnificent countryside, and
mountain walks all within easy driving distance. And the city itself
is an exciting combination of the old and the new, African and European,
and first and third worlds.
Location
On a map Cape Town appears as the end point of the west coast of
Africa. The southernmost point of South Africa is at Cape Aghulas,
which is east of Cape Town.
Attractions
The cableway up Table Mountain on a good weather day
provides fantastic views and there is a scenic walk along the mountain
summit. The Castle of Good Hope, in the city centre
area, is one of the oldest European structures in Southern Africa
built in 1679. The South African Museum and the District
Six Museum are also found in the city centre area. The Kirstenbosch
Botanic Gardens features mostly indigenous plants and are
extremely well maintained. Restored and revamped to service both
tourists and locals, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront
has a lively atmosphere with several good restaurants and bars,
cinemas and good hotels, as well as a very good Aquarium.
Robben Island, which can be seen from the mainland
on a clear day, was a political prison - and is where Nelson Mandela
spent many years. Also known as Seal Island there are sightseeing
trips available to the Island.
Well worth a mention are the coastal "suburbs"
and their beaches, such as Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Noordhoek and Kommetjie
on the Atlantic side; and Simon's Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and
Muizenberg on the Indian Ocean.
A trip to the Cape would not be complete without exploring the wine
routes through Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschoek where
the internationally renowned cuisine of various fine establishments
is complemented by superb wines produced in the area.
Climate
Winter: The Western Cape can be cold with maximum
temperatures of around 17 C and minimum of 5 C. Snow may fall in
the higher areas. The Cape Town area is an exception as it receives
winter rainfall.
Summer: Sunny and dry days mark the summer in the
Western Cape with maximum temperatures around 26 C and minimum 15
C.
When to go
Having a Mediterranean climate, the weather is not a vital component
on deciding when to visit since the winter can be cold and wet.
Activities
A plethora of options to choose from:
On the ground: hiking, mountain biking, Cape Argus
cycle race, horse riding, tennis, golf, bowling. A wine route tour
is wonderful day out.
In the mountains: kloofing (a combination of hiking,
swimming and boulder hopping), abseiling, caving.
In the ocean: sea fishing, surfing, aquaplaning, windsurfing,
jetskiing, paddle skiing, scuba diving, ocean rafting, surfing.
In the air: paragliding, sky diving, helicopter flip.
How To get There
By road
Buses run to and from all main centres and cities in South
Africa so all roads are well signposted.
By air
A busy International Airport accommodates direct flights
as well as indirect flights from Johannesburg with most regular
airlines including: Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa,
Malaysian Airlines, Qantas, and SAA, South Africa's own.
