Best known for
Daan Viljoen Game Park allows one to be in the bush experiencing nature
whilst being only 25 km away from the capital city of Namibia. It
is a popular overnight stop for visitors to Windhoek that want to
avoid the hustle and bustle of the capital. Since there are no dangerous
animals one can walk on the walking trails within the Park. The Park
was proclaimed in 1962 and named after a former administrator, Daan
Viljoen who played a major part in establishing the Park.
Location
This very popular game Park is situated only 25 km west of Windhoek
in the hills of the area known as Khomas Hochland.
Size
The Park is the smallest in Namibia covering an area of 50 sq km and
supports a healthy game population.
Wildlife
Animals seen here include baboons, blue wildebeest, eland, giraffe,
hartebeest, klipspringer, kudu, mountain zebra, oryx, springbok and
steenbok. Over 200 species of birds have been sighted in the game
Park and keen birdwatchers are rewarded with good sightings.
Environment
The rest camp is situated on the banks of the Augeigas Dam.
Vegetation
The Park vegetation is described as highland savannah. The most common
trees found within the Park are: buffalo thorn, camel thorn, candle
thorn, mountain thorn, and the red bush willow.
When to go
The Park is open year round and on a daily basis from sunrise to 6pm.
Activities
Game viewing, bush walking, bird watching and fishing are all on offer
at this game Park. The Augeigas Dam was stocked with barbell, bream
and black bass. The walking trails are well marked and include some
super views. The resort offers a licensed restaurant, a kiosk, and
a swimming pool.
Accommodation
There are thatched bungalows as well as camping facilities within
the Park or else obviously a wide choice of accommodation in nearby
Windhoek, including Hilltop
House, Kalahari
Sands Hotel and Windhoek
Country Club Resort.
How to get there
By road
From Windhoek take the C28 west for approximately 15 km where the
Daan Viljoen Game Park turn off is clearly marked. The gate is 1.5
km from the main road and the Park office a further 2.5 km along the
same road. There is a 6.4 km gravel circular game viewing drive within
the Park.
