Best known for
The Reserve is located in what is known as the Caprivi Strip, a slender
finger of land extending between the 4 countries of Angola, Zimbabwe,
Botswana and Zambia. It borders the famous Okavango River and on the
opposite bank is the Mahango Game Reserve. Just off Caprivi's eastern
border is the tiny Mudumu National Park on the banks of the Kwando
River. The nearby Katimo Mulilo is one of the most remote parts of
Namibia only 4 km from Zambia, and 1,200 km from Windhoek.
Location
The panhandle known as the Caprivi Strip is located in north-eastern
Namibia in a narrow 500 kilometres long strip of land that stretches
east between Angola in the north and Botswana in the south and eventually
reaching Zimbabwe in the east.
The Caprivi Game Reserve stretches about 180 km along the Okavango
River from the Kavango River in the west to the Kwando River in the
east. The Zambezi River forms part of the northern boundary with Zambia.
Visitors are restricted to the road between Kavango and Eastern Caprivi
and thus the game viewing opportunities are not great.
Size
The Caprivi Game Reserve covers an area of 5,715 square km.
Wildlife
A destructive bush war was waged in this area in the 70s and 80s and
the poaching that took place had a negative effect on the wildlife
- although the wildlife is recovering and if continually protected
this area has great promise to become a superb reserve. Animals seen
here include four of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo,
as well as the following species: hippo, roan, kudu, and crocodiles.
There are many water birds in this area.
Environment
The topography is generally flat although there are some 30 to 60
metre high dunes that are covered in vegetation.
Vegetation
The park falls in a savannah area and is covered mainly by deciduous
woodland consisting of species such as wild seringa, copalwood, and
Zambezi teak.
Climate and when to go
One can visit throughout the year although the single road is a torrid
sandy road at the best of times - a 4 x 4 vehicle is a pre requisite.
Activities
Within the park one is permitted to drive in an open safari vehicle
as well as go bush walking although care must be taken since there
are dangerous animals in the park.
Accommodation
Lianshulu Bush Lodge has an acclaimed reputation in Mudumu National
Park just east out of Caprivi on the banks of the Kwando River. Popa
Falls on the Okavango River also has self-catering guesthouses available.
How to get there
By road: drive from Rundu going eastwards in the direction
of Katimo Mulilo - this road passes through the game reserve.
By air: regular domestic flights land at Katimo Mulilo, and
a chartered light aircraft can also be landed there.
