Best known for
The Okavango Delta, the world's largest
inland delta, with a diverse and fascinating range of ecological zones,
which remains one of the least spoilt and most beautiful wildernesses.
The Delta is home to the elusive red Lechwe, an aquatic antelope that
only occurs in shallow swamp areas of Botswana and Zambia.
Size and Location
The Moremi Game Reserve takes up the eastern corner of the Okavango
Delta in the north west of Botswana. It covers an area of 5 000
square km and is almost one third of the entire Okavango Delta area.
Wildlife
Moremi is one of the leading wildlife areas in southern Africa and
is certainly one of the most beautiful. In the mopane woodlands one
will see elephant, impala, roan antelope, sable and baboon, while
the floodplains and grasslands are home to the full spectrum of game
found in the Okavango Delta. Game viewing
is good throughout the year and an abundance of raptors and herons
and the like provide impressive birdwatching opportunities.
Environment and vegetation
This area is very flat and comprises a network of waterways, lagoons
and pans amongst floodplains, islands and reedbanks. A large part
of the reserve is taken up by Chief's Island.
Dense mopane woodlands and riverine forests lead to the open grasslands
of the floodplains and aquatic vegetation in wetter areas.
Climate
The Okavango has a long, dry winter from May to December. The heaviest
rainfall occurs from December to February. Mornings can be bitterly
cold while afternoons on the same day may be uncomfortably hot. August
to November are considered the optimal months to visit Moremi, although
March to July offers good game viewing with less people around.
When to go
The best time to visit is between July and December when it is cooler.
Activities
Outstanding game viewing opportunities by drives, guided walks or
makoro (dugout canoes) trails. Boating, fishing and photographic safaris.
Accommodation
No permanent structures are permitted in the reserve so all the lodges
are located just outside its boundaries. Camp
Moremi, Xigera
Safari Camp, Khwai
River Lodge, and Xakanaxa
Camp are all luxury tented camps with excellent reputations. There
are four campsites available within Moremi Game Reserve.
How to get there
By road
Moremi is accessible by road from Maun or Savuti. From Maun,
the drive is 95 km (3 hours) to the South Gate. From Savuti, the road
to the North gate will depend on the season of travel. Please note
that four-wheel drive vehicles are required in Moremi
Game Reserve.
By air
Air transfers are regularly made from Maun and vehicles from
private camps do the ground transfers.
Precautions
Preventative and prophylactic measures should be taken for malaria.
For campers, wild animals such as hyena and baboons can be very destructive
of food not locked away properly Ð particularly if they can smell
the food within. The best measures for food protection are a metal
trunk that is padlocked.
