> send me holiday options on Fishing in Botswana

The challenging fight of a tigerfish is an attractive lure to both African fishermen and others alike. The Chobe River is the home of the tiger where catches of 5-6 kg are not uncommon and the record is just under 10 kg. The Okavango is a haven for tilapia (bream).

The real bonus is that the main fishing areas also happen to be superb holiday destinations which host a wide variety of accommodation options, see below. Fishing outings will coincide with excellent game viewing, bird spotting and relaxation.

Requirements
Fishing tackle and equipment is available for hire from the recommended lodges below while a few of the lodges include use of equipment in their all-inclusive rate. It is clearly understood that serious fishermen will bring their own equipment.

Variety of fish and locations

90 or so species of fish are found in the Chobe/Zambezi river system, over 20 commonly sought after including tigerfish, tilapia (bream), pike and catfish (barbel). The primary fishing areas in Botswana are the Chobe River and the Okavango Delta.

Recommended lodges specialising in fishing trips:
Chobe River: Impalila Island Lodge
Okavango Delta: Guma Island Lodge, Xugana Island Lodge

Recommended lodges which have fishing as an activity:
Chobe River: Chobe Safari Lodge, Chobe Valley Lodge, Muchenje Safari Lodge
Okavango Delta: Gubanare Camp , Kwara Camp, Macatoo Camp, Okavango River Lodge
Savute: Kwando Lebala Camp

Best times to go
On the Chobe River and in the Okavango fishing for tigerfish and bream is generally at its best when the water is low, from August to February. Catfish (barbel) can be caught all year round but low water levels are best. The quality of fishing in the Delta is also affected by the time and size of the flood (generally May to September).

Prices per person

Fishing is generally included in the daily rates for the recommended lodges above. For specialised fishing trips, surcharges may be charged depending on your requirements with boat usage, guides etc.

Please contact Julie for daily or tailor-made rates.

Horse Riding
>send me Horse Riding Holiday options in Botswana

It is almost certain you'll experience a true sense of freedom on a horseback safari in the Okavango Delta. Such a safari is not strenuous but exciting. The scenery you traverse is stunning and diverse; elephant trails from one palm island to another, plains with fig trees, mopane woodlands and shallow flood plains. At night candlelit dinners and reflection around the campfire before comfortable nights rest both in camp and fly camps depending on the seasons.

The wildlife is excellent during the rides - elephant, zebra, wildebeest, red lechwe and hippo and the call of a lion to remind you they're around as well. You really have the chance to let your hair down and swim and walk in the afternoons.

Safety and requirements

Guides on all trips are well trained and experienced to handle emergencies. In the slim chance that an emergency evacuation is required, this would be carried out by MRI (Medical Rescue International)
Age limit - minimum of 12 years
Weight maximum per person - 95kg (210 lbs)
No. of riders on trips - 1 to 12 (6 is ideal)

Variety of trips
The seven night safari at Macatoo Camp is most recommended but shorter or longer trips can be made (minimum of 3 nights). Other lodges that have horse riding as an activity are:

Chobe: Chobe Valley Lodge, Chobe Safari Lodge,
Okavango Delta: Rann's Camp,
Serowe: Mashatu Game Reserve
Francistown: Cresta Thapama

Best time to go

All trip scenarios are seasonal and dependent on the levels of the Okavango flood (May to September) In the dry winter months June to October, the visibility in the bush is better for game viewing and day temperatures are warm.

Prices per person
(includes meals, beverages, accommodation and VAT)
Daily rates (min.3 nights)  July to October from US$510
Green season: March - April, Nov - Jan from US$295

Flood Arrival: May to June from US$405

Quad biking

> send me Quad Bike Holiday Options for Botswana

Quad biking on the extinct superlake of Makgadikgadi Pans is like nothing else on earth. The Pans are larger than Switzerland, and provide an experience of the vast emptiness of this incredible, mysterious and hitherto unexplored area and to learn how it was formed.

Combined with a stay at either Jack's Camp, or San Camp, exploring the pans by quad bikes will take you to the remotest parts of the Pan as well as the opportunity to see the rare brown hyena, zebra and wildebeest migration around September, and the other fascinating wildlife that has adapted to the area.

Fly Camps under a five billion star ceiling are unforgettable, a moonlit barbecue, waking up in the middle of nowhere, finding your own stone tools and walking to a natural spring in the middle of the desert, the only source of water for man and wildlife for thousands of square kilometres. Quad biking is also ecologically friendly, leaving only a shallow track which will be washed away by summer rains.

Safety and requirements
A qualified guide accompanies you on all trips. Guides are competently trained in their field as well as medical aid, and all guests on safari are covered by MRI (Medical Rescue International).

Variety
2 day expedition to Ntewetwe Pan
tailormade itineraries, including fly camps to Kubu Island for 5 nights with 4 people or more.

Best time to go
this is mostly a dry season only activity, available May - November.

Prices per person (includes packed lunch & sundowners)
Day trip to Ntwetwe Pan including Quad bike excursion - from P250 (approx. US$52)

Please contact Julie for current rates & packages.
